Humility Is A Key To Success

When it comes to martial arts training remaining humble is a key to success. I find myself bothered more and more lately when I hear a martial artist bash another style, system, or technique as ineffective and not working. What I know is that if I am unable to make something work or understand what it should do for me in a self-defense situation, that I don't know what I don't know. Most of the time it is user error that causes students to proclaim that such and such doesn't work, won't work, can't work, or will never work. The truth is that we need to remember that it is possible that things work and we just have not figured out how. If that is the case we need to stop thinking we know and actually learn. We must allow our minds to be stretched and our understanding to be shaped in order to get something.

I know for me as a student that I have had to set aside my ego and being the captain of my domain so that I can learn and grow in the martial arts. Being a student helps me help my students. The difficult lessons aren't from years ago they are from yesterday morning. Remembering how I got beat by smaller, faster guys who have been training longer than I have and have a better understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. In order to learn and grow humility is a key component. Being willing to receive information, advice, encouragement, and most mornings a beating is essential to growth.

Truth is life is filled with challenges, difficulties, and struggles. We don't always win. Winning always has hardship and struggle that comes with it. Hopefully, this reaches someone who needs to hear it. I have often had to learn the hard way.

Cheers!
