Things Learned

Several months ago I started seeing a therapist/counsellor to help me sort through some issues I was having. I had been to counselling before and found some of it helpful. This time I started my journey to the therapist because I was finding that my mindset and attitude were out of whack. So at the prodding of my sister, I decided to go. This was no small decision for me because I have never fancied myself a victim or one who needed help sorting through things. I have always been a DIY type of person.

I have found that changing the way I think about certain things has made them easier to stomach. As a school teacher by day and martial arts instructor by later in the day, I have found that certain parts of my job make me unhappy. I get that some things just have to be done but that does not really make me want to do them. I don't mind overseeing lunch and recess duties but the part, where kids run around, screaming for absolutely no reason has really worn on me. Combine that with the fact that I now have more duties than ever and I have started to hate my day job.

The more duties I do the more I have hated doing them. The noise is very overwhelming at times. The kids are great the noise is not. So I dropped this bit of information about hating my job specifically all the duties on my therapist and I shared how doing those duties was causing depression and discomfort. I was dreading going downstairs to watch over recess.

The change came when my counsellor suggested that I change the way I talk to myself about doing duty. So I made the change. I started telling myself that I'd rather not do the duty instead of saying I hated it. Another strong tool was to begin every day with meditation. I downloaded a follow along meditation app from the Apple Store and started following the guided meditations every morning. Since making the changes in my self-talk and stopping to meditate daily I have found that my days are easier. My burden is lite and I am much more comfortable in my job.

Two quick takeaways: 1) our self-talk is important. 2) taking 15 minutes at the start of my day to focus myself has been life-changing.

Thanks for reading my ramblings.
